It seems to me that a lot of the big steps forward in knowledge and understanding come about by hunches, intuition, dreams and other ‘unreasonable’ avenues. Of course the person having the serendipitous ‘lightbulb moment’, must use the other means (intellect and experience) to get them to the point where a hunch or dream can mean anything.

The real task then, for the intellect and reason is to be able to formulate the most probing questions; A question in which the answer can be ‘understood’ (ie embraced by the intellect and reason)

Non-reasonable ‘answers’ are the remit of poetry, art and mythology.

Answers come from ‘the unconscious’. (Where else could the ‘unknown’ reside?)

Real step changes in our knowledge must always come from ‘the unconscious’. In the mean time we are in the business of re-jigging, refining and generally tinkering around with the reasonable and intellectual building blocks, that we have managed to recover.
