This painting by George Bellows is one of my favourites. He gave it the title ‘Sunlit surf’.
Bellows usually painted outdoors, on small panels that he could develop into large canvases in his island studio or when he returned to New York City.
I love how hard the brushstrokes are working and those colour combinations are sumptuous.
It’s strange, but i don’t actually like this painting as a composition! It doesn’t seem to work and when seen as a thumbnail presents as ‘nothing special’.
But ‘zoom in and immerse yourself’ and it’s truly a mouth watering affair.
Hear the roar and smell the sea-foam.
