The mercurial space on the continuum, at the transition point between body and mind is marked by a sensation of slipping; A sliding away.
The feeling is of a fault-line suddenly shifting.
What was held by weight and friction abruptly gives way. This is a mirroring of the moment when the nightly ‘stream of sleep’ takes us.
We seek the balance of allowing the slip, yet also ‘catching’ its momentum; A resistance to being swept away into ‘oblivion’.
In zhan zhuang there might be a ‘rushing and toppling’. The feet feel as though they are sliding away sideways; Resistance disappearing and yet they are also remaining perfectly still.
Along the way, the sense of hearing shifts, it retreats from the world and suddenly lurches onto other frequencies. Like a radio receiver suddenly raking across the whole span of channels. Strange noises, pops and ‘silent explosions’ herald a change of speed.
